I'm Alison, and I am a graduate student researcher in the Carpenter Lab at the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, affiliated with San Francisco State University. I recieved my Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Science and Management from UC Davis in 2013, and returned to my native Bay Area for grad school.

For my master's research, I am investigating how temperature and acidity regimes on the west coast affect sea anemones and their algal symbionts. I will be conducting field work in California and Oregon to collect specimens for algal cell counts and mitotic index (a measure of how fast algal populations are growing). My work will be useful in predicting shifts in species associated with climate change, as well as simply learning more about the organisms on our coast!

As a graduate student, I also teach laboratory courses at San Francisco State. To date, I have taught a non-majors plant biology lab and am currently teaching an introductory biology lab for majors and coteaching an ecology course at City College of San Francisco.

When I am not at the lab, in the field, or teaching, I enjoy hiking with my family, knitting lots of hats and scarves, and reading fantasy novels.
